Sheriff Benny Napoleon asks Crittendon to be deputy mayor

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

"I'm going to continue to think about it and pray about it," Krystal Crittendon says in response to being the possible deputy mayor if Sheriff Benny Napoleon is elected. "I'm not thinking of this as a political decision, I am a public servant. I've worked for the city of Detroit going on twenty years now, and I just look at this as an extension of my public service."

Crittendon says she's had the discussion with both campaigns since the election ended, and it makes sense that both Mike Duggan and Sheriff Napoleon have talked with Crittendon about joining their teams. The former corporation counsel gained notoriety after challenging the 2012 consent agreement, and has been a vocal opponent of emergency management.

Now, Sheriff Napoleon is asking her to serve as his deputy mayor if he wins the election.

Sheriff Napoleon declined to make a comment Monday night, despite the fact that he spilled the beans Saturday at the National Action Network meeting.

Napoleon is behind in the polls but 30 percent of Detroiters are undecided. However, longtime political strategist Adolph Mongo doesn't believe an endorsement from Crittendon will be enough to change the course of this race.

"She has a future in Detroit, but right now, she won't be a difference-maker in this campaign. Maybe next year, maybe two years from now, but not today," Mongo says. "If I was her, I'd stay uncommitted," he adds.

"If politics is the vehicle that I need to be sitting in order for me to continue to contribute, then that's what I'll do," Crittendon says.

A judge still must hold a trial to determine if Detroit's overall bankruptcy plan is fair and feasible, but support from retirees is vital.
