William Friedkin: It Was All Mechanical, We Did Everything

Posted: Updated:

Who knew "The Exorcist" would be such a huge hit when it released 40 years ago?  Certainly not the director, William Friedkin.  He says he had no idea how big a blockbuster it would be.

"Of course not.  Nor did any of us have any idea there'd be such a thing as home video to keep a movie alive.  That didn't exist when we made 'The Exorcist.' And it's on home video, both Blu-Ray and DVD that a special 40th anniversary edition of "The Exorcist" has just been released.

On Good Day L.A., William Friedkin reminisces about the making of "The Exorcist," and even reveals how the infamous shaking bed was made to shake.  (Remember, there were no computer special effects back then.)

Fun Facts About William Friedkin (Source: Wikipedia)

  • He is an American film director, producer and screenwriter best known for directing The French Connection in 1971 and The Exorcist in 1973; for the former, he won the Academy Award for Best Director. Some of his other films include Sorcerer, Cruising, To Live and Die in L.A., The Guardian, Jade, Bug, and Killer Joe.
  • Friedkin began going to movies as a teenager, and has cited Citizen Kane as one of his key influences.
  • He began working in the mail room at WGN-TV immediately after high school. Within two years (at the age of 18), he started his directorial career doing live television shows and documentaries.
  • His efforts included The People vs. Paul Crump (made with Bill Butler in 1962) which won an award at the San Francisco International Film Festival and contributed to the commutation of Crump's death sentence. Its success helped Friedkin get a job with producer David L. Wolper.

40th anniversary edition of ‘The Exorcist' is now on Blu-Ray and DVD.
