Mass. to provide more vouchers for early education

Posted: Updated:

CHELSEA, Mass. (AP) - Gov. Deval Patrick says his administration plans to issue more than 3,000 new vouchers that will enable the young children of low-income parents to receive early education services.

Patrick made the announcement on Tuesday during a visit to a Head Start program for pre-school aged children in Chelsea.

The governor says the new vouchers will move 3,200 children off a waiting list of about 43,000 for the state subsidies.

The Legislature approved $15 million in additional funding for early education in the state budget for the fiscal year that started July 1. But that was considerably less than the $131 million Patrick had sought, with the goal of eliminating the waitlist.

State Secretary of Education Matthew Malone says children with access to quality early education programs are better prepared when they begin elementary school.
