CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Protesting the lack of House action on immigration reform by GOP leaders, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) were arrested Tuesday afternoon near the Capitol.

Gutierrez was arrested after he spoke at the "Camino Americano: Rally and March for Immigrant Dignity and Respect on the National Mall urging House GOP leaders to allow votes on immigration bills.

Gutierrez, one of the House Democrats negotiating with his GOP counterparts on immigration legislation, was arrested "in an act of civil disobedience," his spokesman Doug Rivlin said.

About 200 others at the rally were taken into custody.

Schakowsky was taken into custody by the Capitol Police, her spokesman, Sabrina Singh told the Chicago Sun-Times.

"Rep. Schakowsky stood in solidarity with her colleagues and immigrant rights advocates to demand a House vote on comprehensive immigration reform. She participated in civil disobedience to urge Republican leadership to bring this critical bill for a vote," Singh said.

The rally was called as part of a push for House GOP leaders to take up immigration reform legislation already passed by the Senate.

Singh said police put wrist ties on Schakowsky before placing her in a police van.

Charles Rangel, of New York, and at least six other House Democrats from around the country, were arrested at the rally.
