One School District Bans Postgame Handshakes

It's a tradition that goes back decades in sports--the post-game handshake. However, one school district in Kentucky is banning the symbol of sportsmanship.

The problem isn't the hand-shake itself. School officials say that the number of post-game fights are on the rise, and the post-game handshake gets students close enough that they can do some damage, if they wanted to.

We all know that emotions can run high after a game, and a lot of schools have high-school rivalries. However, coaches and parents alike think that the new rule will do more harm than good.

"I believe sportsmanship in high school sports is the most important thing you can teach," said Brian Durbin, a varsity soccer coach.

"You try to teach your kids sportsmanship. I think high school sports are basically for that purpose," said Tom Davis, the parent of athlete.

Durbin, the soccer coach came up with a work-around for his athletes. He says that instead of shaking hands after the game, he'll have his players meet face to face with their opponents before the game, and offer the other players a "good luck" hand-shake.

Teams can ignore the new rule, but if they do the district says that coaches and school administrators will be responsible for any fights that break out.
