Driver in Chatham fatality held for 90 days

Posted: Updated:

BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) - A driver charged with striking and killing a man waiting at a Chatham bus stop before causing a crash that injured four people has been ruled a danger to the community.

A Barnstable Superior Court judge on Tuesday ordered 32-year-old Benjamin Shealey jailed without bail for 90 days.

The Cape Cod Times reports that in his decision, the judge cited the death and injuries, as well as Shealey's driving history.

Authorities say Shealey was fleeing Harwich police July 13 when he struck a 62-year-old man at a bus stop. He then struck the car, sending a family of four, including 9-year-old twin girls, to the hospital.

Shealey's attorney argued for his client's release to family, and said Shealey's medicine for paranoid schizophrenia had been reduced shortly before the crash.
