Detroit hit and runs on the rise, 5 killed in two weeks

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Hit-and-run accidents are on the rise in Detroit. The city has seen three hit-and-run accidents in the last 72 hours, the latest involving a 6-year-old boy who, doctors say, has less than a ten percent chance of survival.

28 people have been killed, in Detroit alone, so far this year in hit-and-run accidents. Five of those fatal hit-and-run accidents happened in the last two weeks.

Police say these hit-and-run drivers are almost always distracted, either from intoxication or from texting, and driving without warrants or the proper paperwork. When they are eventually caught, the reason vary for fleeing the scene, but all have one thing on common: they are ruining lives.

"Odds are they are going to get caught, and the consequences are severe. Just leaving the scene itself is a 15-year felony," Scott Sheets tells Fox 2's Maurielle Lue. Sheets oversees the Detroit Police Department's fatal squad.
