Iconic Saugus steakhouse closing its doors

SAUGUS, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) --  A Route 1 landmark north of Boston is closing after 52 years in business.

The management of the Hilltop Steakhouse, known for its big steaks, giant cactus sign and plastic cow statues, has told the Saugus board of selectmen it's closing at the end of business Oct. 20.

The Wednesday letter said changes in the demographics of its customer base, increased competition and costs have been "too great to overcome."

The Route 1 restaurant's manager told FOX 25 she had been working there for 26 years and some waitresses had been there for as many as 40.

According to a 1988 article by the New York Times, the Hilltop once served 2.4 million guests annually, making it the nation's biggest restaurant.
