Live updates: The sentencing of Bobby Ferguson

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (WJBK) -- Kwame Kilpatrick's best friend and co-defendant, city contractor Bobby Ferguson, is scheduled to be sentenced on Friday. He was convicted of 9 counts of public corruption. Prosecutors argued that he should get a sentence similar to Kilpatrick's. Ferguson's attorneys have said he should get no more than 10 years.

Cameras are not allowed in the courtroom so Fox 2 Investigative Producer Ken Martinek will be live blogging from the Federal Courthouse in Detroit (see chat player above).

The government refers to the "Kilpatrick enterprise," a years-long scheme to shake down contractors and reward allies. Text messages from Kilpatrick to Ferguson reveal efforts to fix deals for Ferguson, an excavator who got millions of dollars in city work through the water department.
Contractors said they were forced to take on Ferguson as a partner or risk losing lucrative deals. The government alleged that he in turn shared cash with Kilpatrick.

On Thursday, Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was sentenced to 28 years in prison for corruption. Kilpatrick was convicted earlier this year of two dozen crimes, including racketeering conspiracy, bribery and extortion. The 43-year-old Democrat served as mayor for nearly seven years.

Kilpatrick's father, Bernard, is scheduled to be sentenced next week. He was convicted of one count of filing a false tax return.
