Home invasion suspect arrested day after DPD no-show

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

"Thank you, I am so elated. Thank you Detroit Police." Sonia Seams and her family couldn't be happier.

Their house was broken into Wednesday while no one was home. But, someone was watching, and that someone was Seams' next-door neighbor.

Jerome Golston heard the commotion when the ground-floor bedroom window was broken into. And as the suspect ran out the front door carrying a sack of valuables, Golston began to run after him.

"He broke out the front door and started running down the street, and I got behind him," Golston tells Fox 2's Ron Savage. Golston caught up with the suspect and tackled him to the ground. His wife called 911.

Golston held the suspect down and continued to do so for approximately 30 minutes but police still had not shown up, and Golston could not continue to hold the suspect for very much longer. Golston let him go.

Seams say she and her family did not sleep well Wednesday night. "All night, I kept hearing little noises, and every little thing I did, I was like, 'Somebody's at the door!'"

But relief for the family came quickly.

A suspect is now in custody - thanks to a dropped cell phone that was dropped in the front of the house. The phone was turned over to police and led officers to the suspect. Police say the suspect is only 16 years old.

"You don't know the relief and the excitement and the relief I have right now," Seams says.

As for the neighbor, he says he would help out again in a heartbeat. "It ain't right to be going around taking people's stuff for no reason."
