The two-year-old boy reported to be the son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson died Friday of injuries sustained in an assault, police in South Dakota confirmed.

Adrian Peterson was in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Thursday, reportedly to address a "personal situation" that a source close to Peterson described as "tragic."

TMZ reported Peterson's son was in critical condition after he was allegedly severely beaten by a man dating the mother of his child. Friday afternoon, Sioux Falls, S.D. police said the boy injured in Wednesday's assault has died of his injuries. The boy was not named, but FOX 9 Sports learned it is not Adrian, Jr.

27-year-old Joseph Patterson was arrested Thursday and charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery of an infant -- a Class 2 felony that carries a sentence of up to 25 years in prison.

Police said the charges specify a relationship between Patterson and the mother of the child.

Lincoln County prosecutors will be reviewing police reports for consideration of additional charges. Patterson made his first court appearance Friday and is being held on a $750,000 cash bond.

TMZ reports the mother of the child made the decision to donate the child's organs, which is why he was kept on life support since Thursday evening. Sources told TMZ that Peterson was informed of the decision to take the boy off life support before the news went public.

TMZ was also told Peterson will be planning the funeral with other members of the boy's family.

"Thank you to my family, my fans and fans of other teams for their support."

"The NFL is a fraternity of brothers and I am thankful for the tweets, phone calls and text messages from my fellow players."

"God Bless everyone and thank u so much."

"This is a private matter and I'm just going to ask you all to respect my privacy, and that's all I'm going to say about the situation," Peterson said after practice Friday.

Peterson added that he will play Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

"Football is something I'll always fall back on to get me through tough times," Peterson said. "That's what I need."
