CHELSEA, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A Chelsea police officer was injured in a crash at a work detail early Friday morning.

Chelsea police said the 35-year-old officer was working on the southbound side of Route 1 near the Tobin Bridge when the crash happened at about 2:20 a.m. Investigators said 37-year-old Elvin Maldonado, of Hyde Park, sparked a chain-reaction crash that sent the officer's cruiser 50 feet into the middle traffic lane.

The officer was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening. Two people in the minivan, including a pregnant woman, were taken Massachusetts General Hospital as a precaution.

The officer's name was not released.

Maldonado is set to be arraigned on Reckless Operation charges in Chelsea District Court.
