Salisbury couple aboard cruise hears cries for help from capsized crew

SALISBURY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A Salisbury couple on a Royal Caribbean cruise is credited with saving people drifting on a capsized boat.

On Sept. 28, Kendra Nagy stepped out onto the balcony of her stateroom to take in her surroundings on the first night of the southern Caribbean cruise. When she returned to bed in the middle of the night, she left the door opened to listen to the ocean when suddenly she heard shouts for help.

"It was someone yelling, 'Hey, hey hey,' then we heard these whistles, really strong whistles," described Kendra's husband, Roy.

The couple said they realized the noise didn't seem to be coming from the ship, it was coming from out of the water. The pair called the main desk to inform them of what they heard, prompting a search that resulted in the rescue of Matt Spencer and his two friends.

The next morning, the Nagys met the survivors.

"They just came up and right away said thanks for saving our lives, thank you, thank you, thank you. It just was overwhelming," said Roy.

Spencer wrote Kendra and Roy an e-mail, thanking them again.

"By the time the cruise ship passed, I was bent over throwing up because I had expended too much energy whistling," Spencer explained in the message, "Hope faded as we noticed there was no one on deck, there was no one walking around, we were that close. It was 4 a.m., no one was awake."

Matt Spencer and his friends were on what they call a "having fun mission" from St. Croix to St. John when their boat flipped.

Spencer has Massachusetts roots, spending a good portion of his childhood in Swampscott. He plans to return to Boston for business in December and perhaps a reunion will take place then.
