Gina's People: Los Ryderz

Posted: Updated:

Many of us think the world is so messed up, there's nothing we can do. Wrong!  Little things can go a long way. JP Partida started a bicycle club in Watts promoting peace, love and unity.  It's working.

Los Ryderz bicycle club has been changing one young life after another.  Partida started the club knowing first hand how kids in the hood end up in gangs. "A lot of these kids need something to belong to and if gangs are available, then that's what they go with," says Partida.  A perfect example is 19 year old William Fabian.  Fabian used to get into so much trouble that he was kicked out of school.  He says,   thanks to Los Ryderz and Partida, he's been able to turn things around.  Fabian says, "My teachers, they just say I changed my ways.  Instead of acting all bad, I think things through and talk about my problems.  I'm gonna graduate this year."

Similar success story for 15 year old Sandra Argueta. She is known as Whisper because of her soft voice.  But other than that, there was nothing soft about her. Whisper was the tough, troubled girl always ready for a fight.  "I was so angry because when I was young, I didn't get much attention from my family and I don't know why I got this attitude, if I don't like someone, I don't like them."  Sandra says she had no goals in life. Cycling through the neighborhood with Los Ryderz has changed that in more ways than one.  She wants to be a cop some day and she says, "I used to be 190 pounds. Now, I'm 150. I wanna get to at least 130, that's my goal."

NIcholas Ruiz was one of the first bike members of Los Ryderz. He left the gangs, finished high school and he's now in college.  He says, "Thanks to him (Partida), I am who I am now."

Partida started the club with a handful of kids.  All of the bikes, he either bought at garage sales or they were donated.  JP says, "A lot of these kids ask me if I get paid. No, I don't get paid.  My pay is seeing them succeed. Seeing them stay out of trouble, seeing them not end up six feet below ground, that's what makes me feel good."

If you know people making a difference in their community like JP Partida, let Gina Silva know.  Every Monday, she features the best Fox 11 viewer of the week:

This week we want to make a federal case for Joseph (1998) finding a forever family, so we obtained the necessary clearances to accompany Joseph to the Los Angeles Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). And during our friendly investigation, we found Joseph to be a dynamic teen with a good bit of focus and determination for someone his age.
