NH clerk who scared off robber with concealed weapon fired from job

NASHUA, N.H. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A gas station clerk who scared off a potential robber by showing his concealed weapon has since been fired.

Shannon "Bear" Cothran lost his job Monday for violating the company's "no guns" policy only hours after he scared off a knife-wielding suspect who entered the Shell gas station demanding cash at about 3 a.m., reports the Nashua Patch.

Cothran, 29, told the newspaper he didn't think twice before pulling out his gun and does not regret his decision. In fact, he said he hopes the company, where he has worked for the past 10 years, changes its policy.

Nouria Energy released a statement Wednesday, saying their employees are their most cherished assets and the safety and security of their customers is their top priority.

"It is with that goal in mind that we do not allow firearms in the workplace. We specifically train our employees on how to react during a robbery attempt to prevent the situation from escalating. Cashiers are instructed to give the intruder what they ask for in an attempt to resolve the conflict peacefully and as soon as possible," read the statement in-part.

The company goes on to say they care about the personal well-being of the employees like Cothran, not the money in the cash register.

According to Cothran, who has had a permit to carry for eight years, there have been 20 reported armed robberies at convenience stores in the city during the past few months. He said the rash of robberies prompted him to carry a gun.

Cothran said his boss and district managers went to bat for him to save his job, but said he would have to think twice if the decision to fire him were reversed.
