Jesse Jackson, local leaders start petition against Detroit bankruptcy

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

Rev. Jesse Jackson of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Al Garrett of the AFSCME, Rev. Wendell Anthony, mayoral candidate Sheriff Benny Napoleon and councilwoman Joann Watson announced Thursday the start of a petition against the state's takeover of Detroit.

The group laid out a plan to get 100,000 signatures to present to the U.S. Senate.

A outline of the petition, as found on change.org, reads:

"We call on our elected leaders in Michigan and Washington, D.C. to restore the city of Detroit and help return it to greatness.  The current bankruptcy plan is not a fair solution because it jeopardizes the well-being of the city's pensioners, its low-income citizens and its dedicated civil servants, particularly its first responders."
