New Jersey congressman writes check, gives back shutdown pay

(WJBK) -- Rep. Frank LoBiondo says he's giving back the pay he earned during the government shutdown to reduce the national debt.

LoBiondo, a Republican from New Jersey's 2nd District, sent a personal check payable to the U.S. Treasury Department in a letter to Caroline Klemp, director of member services in Congress' Office of Finance.

The congressman wrote: "The check is a repayment of my salary incurred during the 16 day period of the partial government shutdown and is to be used towards the reduction of public debt."

LoBiondo tweeted a photo of the check and letter as well (see above).

LoBiondo isn't the only lawmaker who has signaled they would refuse their pay during the shutdown. On Oct. 10, The Washington Post reported nearly 250 lawmakers planned to donate, refuse or hold in escrow compensation earned over the course of the impasse.

The government reopened its doors Thursday after a battle-weary Congress approved a bipartisan measure to end the partial shutdown and avert the possibility of an economy-jarring default on U.S. obligations.

SOUND OFF: Should Congress take LoBiondo's example and donate their salary?
