NJ Same Sex Couples Wed Under Law

Posted: Updated:

New Jersey is now the 14th state in the country that recognizes same sex marriage.

A marriage that's been years in the making is finally official.

Manish Mishra-Marzetti of Cherry Hill and his partner Jeffrey were one of 4 same-sex couples to exchange vows before Cherry Hill mayor Chuck Cahn.

"It is big, it's big and it's momentous," Manish said.

The Mishra-Marzetti's say tonight's ceremony should mark the final hurdle in their long-standing fight for marriage equality.

It was a move that surprised many. Governor Chris Christie, who wanted to make gay marriage a ballot question rather than a decision in Trenton, withdrew his appeal and forfeited his fight to overturn a judge's ruling allowing same-sex couples to wed.

The governor explaining in part quote, "...the Court has now spoken clearly as to their view of the New Jersey Constitution and, therefore, same-sex marriage is the law."

The Mishra-Marzetti's are excited for their two-year-old son Jacen to grow up in a state where his parents' marriage is recognized by law.

"With him being able to know that his family has full recognition as other families as he goes to school, grow up, it matters the world to me," Manish said.
