Theft of car from Dunwoody parking lot baffles police

Posted: Updated:
DUNWOODY, Ga. -

Police are puzzled as to how thieves managed to steal a woman's car in Dunwoody. The only way the woman knew the car was missing was because it was returned to a different parking spot.

The Smyrna woman, who asked not to be identified, said she parked her two-door Infiniti at a Super Target and used her remote device to lock it. After shopping, she went back out to the parking lot and found that her car wasn't there.

"I walked in the parking lot for a little while pressing the alarm to see if , you know, perhaps I forgot where I parked, and I realized that, no, my car had been stolen," she said.

Authorities told the victim that they found her car about 30 minutes later parked in front of a Ross store next to the Target. Police said the car had no damage and no signs of being wired.

"They had gotten into my car without any traces, so they had obviously used some type of device that allowed them to gain entry without forcefully doing so. And not only gain entry but also start the car and take off," said the woman.

Dunwoody Police Officer Tim Fecht said that surveillance footage appears to show the victim walking into the store and then the vehicle backs out of the parking spot. He said it appeared that two juvenile males were in the vehicle.

Fecht said that some criminals in California had been known to use a device that picks up a frequency that locks a car.

"Then they simulate that with a device and able to gain entry into vehicles," Fecht said.

Authorities are reviewing the surveillance footage in hopes of identifying the two juveniles.
