Dedicated Northwestern walk-on earns full-scholarship

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

James Montgomery III, a 2-year walk-on for Northwestern University's basketball team, proved that working hard does lead to achieving your dreams.

Head coach Chris Collins announced Thursday, in front of every one of Montgomery's teammates, that the senior guard from Los Angeles would be put on full-scholarship this year.

"He comes every day and he has as much energy as anyone on the team," Collins began. "He is our best perimeter defender. The guy, through 12 practices, who has done the best job of doing what he is supposed to do, is James."

Amid a chorus of applause from his teammates, James' slow smile spread to fill his entire face, as he realized what his hard work and dedication earned him.

Montgomery shook Collins' hand and gave him a great big hug. The team decided to do the same. James called his mother and sister after the meeting to share the good news.

You can imagine the delighted screams he heard on the other end of the line. His sister couldn't believe it. His mother ended up in tears.

"My son," his mother said. "My son!"

The pride radiating from her son's face was just, the best.

Congratulations to James!
