Sea Lions Found Dead of Gunshot Wounds

MALIBU (FOX 11) - Wildlife rescuers say four sea lions that washed ashore in Malibu earlier this month died of gunshot wounds.

A sea lion died shortly after he was rescued on Broad Beach with multiple gunshot wounds on Oct. 10. The following day, another sea lion was found dead on Big Rock Beach with bullet holes.

The following week, a sea lion was rescued in Point Dume with gunshot wounds, he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

On Oct.1, a necropsy report confirmed that a sea lion found off Pirate's Cove had also died of bullet wounds.

It is unknown how the sea lions were shot. There is speculation among the marine rescue community that fisherman hunting for squid off shore are responsible. However, these claims have yet to be proven, according to a marine fisheries law enforcement official. 

Sea lions are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Any harm caused to a sea lion, among other sea mammals, could carry a $10,000 fine.
