Planning begins for 2014 Boston Marathon

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Planning has begun for a bigger and safer 2014 Boston Marathon.

Officials said they are starting early and focusing on security. Meetings have already begun between state and local public safety agencies within many communities.

There will be 36,000 runners in 2014's race, which is 9,000 more than this year.

Officials say 5,600 runners were on the marathon route when two bombs detonated near the finish line. Since they could not finish the marathon, they were sent invitations to take part in next year's race without qualifying again. Organizers say 5,000 runners already accepted.
