Swaddling Babies: Good Or Not?

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

It's an age-old practice, and it went out of style for by the seventeenth century, but now swaddling is gaining popularity with new moms. However, some experts say that it may do more harm than good.

Swaddling, the act of wrapping a baby tightly with a blanket so the movements of the limbs are tightly restricted, dates back to the stone age.

Today, nine out of 10 babies are swaddled in North America, according to a study by Southampton University Hospital. Parents mainly use it to try to soothe their fussy baby and help them feel some security.

However, British health experts are warning against the practice. They warn that wrapping up your baby too tightly could cause their hips to become misaligned.

The topic was became center stage about three months ago, when Prince William and his wife Catherine showed off their baby, Prince George, wrapped in a blanket.

Swaddling could lead to problems later on in life, like osteoporosis. Some people may even need hip replacements once they become middle-aged.

Despite the warning, some parents say that they're still going to do it. They say they haven't seen any problems, and they feel it makes the baby feel safe and secure.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
