BOSTON (AP) - It's Halloween, which means it's time to remind kids and parents about some simple steps to take to keep safe while trick-or-treating.

The Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation says trick-or-treaters should plan a route ahead of time, stay in well-lit areas where there are a lot of people around and carry a flashlight.

Children should be accompanied by an adult and wear reflective patches or tape at night. Teens should travel in groups.

Parents should always check treats for any kind of tampering before allowing kids to eat them. They should also not let children accept homemade treats from someone they don't know very well.

Jack-o'-lanterns and other candles should be placed away from curtains and other flammable objects, and lighted pumpkins should not be left unattended.
