Bing: Volunteers helping to curb Angels' Night fires

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (WJBK) -- Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says there were no big surprises during the first two nights of the city's annual Halloween season anti-arson campaign.

"But I'm glad it's raining tonight," said Bing, who believes this year's total number of fires will fall below last year's count of 93.

Sources, however, tell FOX 2's Roop Raj 50 fires burned throughout the city on Wednesday, up from the daily average of 20-30. Detroit fire Senior Chief Larry Gassel says "the city was pretty busy" Wednesday night and early Thursday.

Detroit residents and others have been on patrol this week as part of an annual anti-arson campaign for the pre-Halloween period that once saw an upsurge of fires. "I want to thank the people in our neighborhoods. They've come out and done an excellent job," said Bing.

The city says fire totals won't be released until after the Angels' Night period, which runs through Thursday.

The patrols are focused particularly on protecting vacant structures from arsonists. Those interested in volunteering can call 313-224-4415 or visit angelsnight.org.
