George Washington University professor assaulted near Dupont Circle

WASHINGTON -

A George Washington University Professor is in critical condition after a vicious assault Sunday near Dupont Circle.

By the time D.C. police got to S Street and Connecticut Avenue in Northwest D.C. Sunday morning, 39-year-old Jason Chambers was out cold.

They say he had been with friends earlier but was walking alone in a silver Halloween costume when he was approached by a man on foot and attacked.

"I think it's horrible. That usually does not happen in this neighborhood right here," Morgan Danchik says of the community he has lived in for ten years.

Chambers, a part-time fencing professor at George Washington, has multiple injuries including severe head trauma.

In a statement, Lynn Goldman, Dean of the School of Public Health Services where he taught, says, "I, along with the academic community at the school of public health services, send our well wishes to Jason.”

The attack has people living nearby rethinking their ideas about safety.

"My apartment was broken into recently, and it makes me nervous to see that any area of town could have potential problems," Chauna Martinez says.

Because of the severity of Chambers' injuries, homicide investigators are handling the case, warning people to on guard, especially in the overnight hours. Chambers was attacked at 4:20 a.m.

"I do feel it's safe, but in the morning like that, you don't know if people have been drinking, partying. Stuff does happen. You have to keep an eye out, know your surroundings," Danchik says.

Police don't have a motive for the attack yet, but they say it does not appear that Chambers was robbed.
