Suspect arrested after police search in Attleboro

Posted: Updated:

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) - A suspect police believe was connected to a shooting was arrested after a standoff in Attleboro Friday.

The standoff prompted police to tell residents of an Attleboro neighborhood and school children to stay put as police attempt to capture the suspect.

Police said a man was taken by ambulance to a Providence hospital with serious injuries after being shot at about 3:45 a.m. on Friday near Fourth Street.

According to reports, officers later surrounded a home where a suspect was believed to be hiding. An arrest was made Friday afternoon.

Nearby residents were told to stay in their homes and the Attleboro school department said on Twitter that it had issued a shelter-in-place order for five city schools as a precaution, with officials saying there was no immediate threat to those schools.

High School Principal Bill Runey posted  a letter to parents on Attleboro High School's Facebook Friday:

Dear AHS Community,

Due to an ongoing police investigation in the city, the Attleboro Public Schools, in collaboration with the Attleboro Police Department, have issued an order to shelter-in-place for five schools: Thacher, Willet, Studley, Brennan, and AHS. This decision is a precaution, not a response to an immediate threat. The safest place for students at this time is in their schools. We will keep parents informed as further information becomes available.

Thank you.
In the strongest sense of Blue Pride, I remain,
Bill Runey
Principal
