Armed driver arrested after crash on Telegraph kills suspect's mother, injures his son

One woman is dead, a young boy is in the hospital and the driver is in custody after an accident on Telegraph Road Friday.

The moment of impact was caught on camera. A van sped through a red light and collided with an SUV. The impact ejected an 11-year-old boy from the van, who is recovering in the hospital right now and listed in "fair condition."

When police arrived at the scene they say the driver got out of the van carrying a loaded gun. Officers talked him into giving the weapon up and took Leon Madison, 34, into custody.

Neighbors confirmed his identity to Schwartz after seeing Fox 2 video of him being placed into police custody. They say Madison is a cancer patient and was just in the hospital recently. They also say the woman in the vehicle, now deceased, is Madison's mother and the boy is his son.

Police recovered multiple weapons from inside Madison's vehicle and military-style weapons at his residence.

The woman was taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries. Police say she may have been shot, and are waiting for a medical examiner to determine the cause of death.

Meanwhile Madison is not facing any charges yet and is in the hospital under observation while police continue to investigate.
