Artie Lange: I Was In A Dark Room All The Time

Posted: Updated:

"I reached a level a lot of comics don't reach..but you see with me, I was always like, with booze and drugs...whatever mood I was in was amplified..."

Artie Lange has battled demons throughout his life and in his new book "Crash and Burn" he opens up about them...but does it with humor. Drugs, drinking, his suicide attempt, nothing is off limits. Steve and Maria asked Artie about one of his low points: getting a hefty payday in Vegas during Super Bowl weekend and leaving with virtually none of it.

"One night I got paid 140 thousand dollars to do standup...I about broke even. I lost 80 grand at the tables and spent another 10 thousand on some ladies...and I had to pay commission to my agents and stuff...I think I probably broke even for the weekend. That's depressing!"

Artie also talked about how he got help from someone he never expected to: Dr. Drew Pinsky.

"He would call me like once a month just to see if I was alright and talk to me for like ten minutes knowing I would never do any show or anything and those talks helped me a lot, they did. He's a pretty brilliant guy and I respect that."

Another person who surprised Artie with a phone call? The Boss himself. Springsteen called him while he was staying with his mother and she gave Artie the message.

"Again, a benefit of being on a big show like Howard, I always said how much I love Bruce...and one night she (mom) comes into the room real casual and says "Artie, a Bruce Springsteen's on the phone." I pick up the phone and go Bruce? He's like yeah, how you doin' man?...and he talked to me for about an hour...he said call me anytime if you need me. I always thought it'd be funny if every day I called him up and said hey you wanna play volleyball? Let's go bowling!"
