SALEM, N.H. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The Kmart department store in Salem, N.H. was evacuated Monday afternoon while the Salem Police Department investigated a bomb threat, police officials said.

The Salem Plaza Shopping Center the Kmart is part of was also closed while police checked the area.

New Hampshire State Police and bomb-sniffing dogs were on their way to the plaza, and police cautioned people to avoid the area.

A Kmart on Rodgers Street in Lowell, Mass. received a bomb threat at around 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon. Police have not said whether the two cases were related. The same Kmart in Lowell was the target of a bomb threat on Friday, as well.

Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad responded to a number of bomb threats at stores in Acton, Braintree, Milford, Saugus and Somerville.

Police said they have responded to similar incidents at Kmart stores around the country in recent months.

An investigation is ongoing.
