GAINESVILLE, Ga. -

Jury selection is underway in the trial of a man accused in the deaths of two brothers. A boating accident last year on Lake Lanier killed Jake and Griffin Prince.

Paul Bennett faces homicide by vessel and boating under the influence charges in the accident.

Prosecutors reportedly offered Bennett a plea deal of eight years to serve and 30 years on probation, but the boater refused it.

If convicted, each of the homicide by vessel counts carries a three-year minimum and 15-year maximum, plus one year each on the remaining misdemeanors.

The Prince family expressed disappointment in Bennett's decision in a Facebook post.  It reads, in part, "...the man who killed our children was offered a deal by the district attorney. They were hoping to spare our family and our dear friends further pain and suffering."

Some Gainesville residents said they were torn by the decision.

"He can have a trial, that's what needs to be, but I just think it is a tragedy for the family of the kids because they didn't want that," said Kathy Boyd. "They wanted this to be over."

Bennett's trial is expected to last about a week.

Since the deadly accident, lawmakers have passed the "Jake and Griffin Prince BUI Law," which lowered the legal alcohol limit for boaters in Georgia.
