14-year-old arrested after robbery, police pursuit

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Authorities say a 14-year-old has been arrested following a robbery and police chase that started in Atlanta and ended in DeKalb County on Tuesday morning.

Police say the investigation started after two people reported being robbed by two men on Caroline Street.  The victims said the two suspects fled the scene in a gold Lexus, and police canvassed the area looking for them.  They tracked down a vehicle matching the description they received from the robbery victims, but the suspects refused to stop.

Investigators say officers pursued the suspects on I-20 east from Moreland Avenue, and they ended up at the intersection of River Road and Oakvale Road in DeKalb County.  That's where the suspects' vehicle hit a mail box, and three men got out and took off on foot into the woods.

Officers followed them, and they fired shots after one of the suspects pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it toward an officer.  Police used K9 units and a helicopter to search for the men, and about three hours later, they discovered the 14-year-old hiding behind a home. Officers say the robbery victims were able to identify him in a line up, and he was arrested on a previous warrant for burglary.

Investigators say they found a weapon inside the vehicle, along with several things that were taken from the victims of robberies in other jurisdictions which were reported on the same night.

Hours after the chase, police say they received a call about man's body in the 5300 block of River Road. The man had died of a gunshot wound.  Investigators later determined that the body was not connected to the robbery and chase that ended on the same road.  That case has been ruled a homicide.
