Toddler dies after being struck by car in Worcester driveway

WORCESTER, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Police say a toddler hit alongside his mother by their own car Friday afternoon has died.

Police said the car was parked on a sloped driveway and started rolling on its own in the area of Bjorklund Ave. and Chester St.

The car crashed into 18-month-old Bennett Roaf and his 33-year-old mother. It traveled across the street and got hung up on a boulder on the lawn of a church.

Police said they saw EMT's performing CPR on the boy when they arrived. He was transported to UMass Medical where he was pronounced deceased.

His mother, who neighbors identified as Cheryl Roaf, was treated and released from the hospital with a shoulder injury.

"I'm sure it was just a freak accident," said a neighbor Jose Reyes. "They're a great family. They take great care of their kids."

Roaf told police she was getting into the car when it started to roll.

The car will be inspected for mechanical issues.
