Organizers plant daffodils along Boston Marathon route

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Hundreds of volunteers put their green thumbs to work as they planted flowers along the Boston Marathon Route Saturday.

The bright yellow "Marathon Daffodils" are expected to bloom around the time of next year's marathon, April 21, 2014.

Co-organizer Kathy Thomas told FOX 25 a group of volunteers that included local residents and garden clubs planted 100,000 bulbs along the 26.2-mile stretch from Hopkinton to Boston.

Thomas said the response to the project she organized alongside her friend, Diane Valle, has been great. She said they finished their work in Kenmore Square hours ahead of schedule Saturday after 50 volunteers turned out to help.

Group organizers hope the cheerful flowers will send a message of solidarity and continue the idea of "Boston Strong" one year after the bombings that killed three and injured hundreds more.

Marathon Daffodils organizers hope to raise $24,000 for their project. As of Saturday, they had raised $24,000. If you'd like to donate, e-mail marathondaffodils@gmail.com.
