Workers begin first-ever accelerated replacement of MBTA bridge

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON ( -- Officials say replacing an MBTA bridge in Dorchester will only take 56 hours.

Workers began removing the 102-year-old Red Line Bridge over Clayton Street Saturday. MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard Davey planned to do a site visit at 5 p.m. as workers brought the new, pre-assembled bridge into place.

The renovation is the first time "Accelerated Bridge Construction" techniques were used to replace a bridge in the MBTA subway system. If accelerated techniques were not used, officials say the operation would have taken 30 months.

Shuttle buses were brought in to replace the Red Line between Ashmont and Braintree until Sunday.
