Savannah hosts its 3rd Rock 'n' Roll Marathon

Posted: Updated:

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Savannah is hosting its third Rock 'n' Roll marathon with thousands of runners from across the U.S.

Organizers say 14,700 runners were at the starting line Saturday morning for the main 26.2-mile road race and a half marathon.

The men's full-marathon winner was 23-year-old Eric McDonald of Groveland, Mass., with a time of two hours, 29 minutes and 47 seconds. The women's winner was 23-year-old Alyssa Kulik of Columbia, S.C. Her time was two hours, 53 minutes and nine seconds.

Savannah-Chatham County police said Saturday afternoon that one runner, a 35-year-old man from South Carolina, died at a local hospital after becoming ill near the finish line. Police spokesman Julian Miller said the man's name was being withheld pending notification of his family.
