New technology warns drivers of red light cameras

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

New technology is popping up faster than the flash that captures drivers running red lights and speeding.

From TomTom to Garmin to apps like Waze, the safety camera alert craze is booming, and for Chicago that could be the difference between drivers saving money or the city making big bucks.

"It could be bad, but I guess it alerts us so it does help us," said Chicagoan Julie Rios.

"There are people who are spending hundreds, even thousands of dollars paying fines for red light tickets and it's even going to be worse with the speed cameras," said Mark Wallace in an interview with FOX 32's Tisha Lewis.

Wallace and others spent their fourth Saturday protesting Chicago's speed and red light cameras. This was their first demonstration on the north side at Gompers Park where speed cameras are up and running on the 41-hundred block of West Foster Avenue.

Wallace hosts the People Show on WVON. He's also the Executive Director of Citizens to Abolish Red Light Cameras.

"Speed cameras as the mayor has proposed them to be when he first rolled this out is that this was about protecting the safety of our children, protecting them from being hit by cars around parks and schools. Well the fact is that the data shows children are not being struck by cars around parks and schools. Our kids are being struck by guns and bullets around schools," said Wallace.

The city insists its mission is to maximize the safety of child pedestrians.

Of Chicago's 3,000 crashes annually between motor vehicles and pedestrians, about 800 involve children. Now with the city's grace period over for speed cameras, some are turning to these alerts and other apps for help.

"I don't think that we should have to have alerts for booby traps that are set by our government," said Wallace.

"Technology is progressing so rapidly these days, as long as it's helping us prevent ourselves from being in accidents than we should keep using it," said Jeremy Gruspe.

Supporters of the city's safety cameras say you can avoid the headache, tickets and fines by avoiding speeding or running red lights. The Citizens to Abolish Red Light Cameras plans to protest at another speed camera site next Saturday.
