Mass. town dedicates new World War I monument

Posted: Updated:

SHREWSBURY, Mass. (AP) - The central Massachusetts town of Shrewsbury has dedicated a new memorial to eight local men who died 95 years ago in World War I.

The Telegram & Gazette reports more than 250 people attended Monday's dedication. The granite monument and flagpole replace a crumbling memorial dedicated in 1924 to honor a local doctor killed serving on the Western Front in 1918.

Town officials and veterans groups started raising the $120,000 needed to replace the monument in 2009. Donors included school children, local philanthropists and an architect and builder who gave their services.

The monument includes history about the war as well as the names of the eight men.

Town Manager Daniel Morgado said, "We hope like those so honored here that someday there truly will be an end to all wars."
