No Place To Call Home: The Plight Of Homeless Veterans

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of thousands of veterans are coming back after their deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan and if history is any indication, many of them will end up homeless and an increasing number of those will be women.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs there are at least 67-thousand homeless veterans across the nation right now. Of those, 40-percent are African American and Hispanic and 8-percent are women. Not only that but another one and a half million veterans are at risk of becoming homeless. And of those who already are, the largest number of them are in the Los Angeles area where as many as 6-trhousand men and women who served their country are without a permanent residence on any given night.

It is a problem that has been persistent for decades. In fact, the largest group of homeless veterans are those who served in Vietnam. The Veterans Administration says it would like to eliminate homelessness among veterans by the year 2015. I don't know anyone who believes that's going to happen.

That being said, it is an issue that cannot be ignored and to which, fortunately, more and more attention and resources are being directed. The story I did that is attached here really drives home the point, no pun intended.

Recently, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Rolf M. Treu ruled that teacher tenure statutes -- violate the California state constitution. In the landmark case "Vergara v. California," Judge Treu held that tenure makes it almost impossible to fire incompetent teachers.
