Board of Regents votes to approve KSU-SPSU merger

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - The University System of Georgia Board of Regents has voted to approve merging Kennesaw State University and Southern Polytechnic State University.

University system officials said Tuesday that processes to set the merger into motion will be executed within the next year.

Officials say the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools must also approve of the merger at its December 2014 meeting before the Board of Regents can issue its final approval of the consolidation in January 2015.

The proposal to merge the schools drew criticism from SPSU students who said their school's academic and social atmosphere wouldn't mix well with that of Kennesaw State's.

Officials have said the consolidated school will keep Kennesaw State's name, and its president, Dan Papp, will serve as president of the consolidated school.
