Francona beats Farrell for Manager of the Year

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) — Terry Francona of the Cleveland Indians has won the AL Manager of the Year award in a close vote, and Clint Hurdle of the Pittsburgh Pirates is a runaway winner in the National League after both guided small-budget teams to charming turnarounds.

Francona edged John Farrell of the World Series champion Boston Red Sox by 4 points in Baseball Writers' Association of America balloting announced Tuesday. Francona received 16 of 30 first-place votes to 12 for Farrell.

It was the first Manager of the Year honor for Francona, who led the Red Sox to World Series titles in 2004 and 2007. Voting is conducted before the postseason.

Hurdle was selected first on 25 of 30 NL ballots after steering the Pirates to the playoffs in their first winning season since 1992.
