Palmer casino vote recount set

Posted: Updated:

PALMER, Mass. (AP) -- A recount in the Palmer referendum on Mohegan Sun's proposal to build a $1 billion casino in the Massachusetts town has been scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 26.

The Board of Registrars on Tuesday certified that the petitions submitted last week from the town's five precincts had the required number of valid signatures.

Voters rejected the casino proposal on Nov. 5 by a 93-vote margin, 2,657 to 2,564.

The recount was requested by Mohegan Sun and some Palmer residents concerned about problems with a precinct 2 voting machine and other alleged irregularities.

A lawyer for Connecticut-based Mohegan Sun said he was disappointed the recount would not be held sooner, because the company's plans are in limbo.

Mohegan Sun is vying for the only casino license in western Massachusetts under the state gambling law.
