The mother of the 14-year-old boy who died after a swimming accident at East Detroit High School says everybody loved her son, and remembers him as outgoing, smart and loveable.

KeAir Smith was taken off life support and died on Monday. School officials say police and fire rescue were called to the school shortly after 1 p.m. on Friday after reports of an accident in the pool area. Emergency responders rendered first aid to the student and transported him to the hospital for further treatment.

Eastpointe police detectives are investigating what caused the apparent accident, and are interviewing students and staff that were in the pool area during the incident. Some of KeAir's classmates have told various versions of what may have happened, including kids horsing around in swim class - playing - and KeAir may have been pushed in. KeAir did not know how to swim and was taking the course to learn.

Lakisha Swift was told when her son went underwater three students jumped in trying to rescue him, but couldn't. Someone ran to get a teacher, who we're told managed to get him out of the pool.

"He went 14 minutes with no oxygen to his brain, caused a lot of brain damage," Lakisha tells Fox 2's Andrea Isom. "Whatever happened, he didn't deserve it." Lakisha says it is unacceptable if a teacher or instructor was not in the pool area at the time of the incident.
