Guarding Lawrence mayoral ballots to cost $25K

Posted: Updated:

LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) - The cost of the around-the-clock police detail guarding the ballots cast in last week's Lawrence mayoral election is expected to surpass the $25,000 mark.

The ballots are being guarded because incumbent William Lantigua asked for a recount after losing by 57 votes to City Councilor Daniel Rivera.

The Eagle-Tribune reports that Chief James Fitzpatrick tells City Councilor Mark Laplante that the cost of overtime will pass the $25,000 mark by this weekend, the earliest a recount could be conducted.

Two officers are guarding the vault in three eight-hour shifts so both doors are covered. Each of the six officers manning the detail every day are doing it on overtime because the police department does not have the manpower to assign officers to the post during their regular shifts.
