Movie Critic Matt Atchity: Holiday Movies Are Starting Up

Posted: Updated:

Matt Atchity predicts "Thor: The Dark World" will own the box office for the second straight week, which is why three smaller films are opening this weekend. The movie most likely to give Thor a run for it's money is "The Best Man Holiday", a sequel coming out almost 15 years after the original. Matt says with a cast like this one, you can't go wrong and the reviews seem to back that.

"A lot of comedy here. A little bit of unexpected emotion, a little pathos, a little bit of melodrama but not necessarily in a bad way, the critics mostly like it."

Alexander Payne was been impressing critics throughout his career and his latest is no different. "Nebraska" is garnering great reviews and Matt says this one is similar to his other movies in some ways.

"Critics are really liking this, they're really calling it a great performance by Bruce Dern here This is probably closer to "Sideways" people are saying...it's sharper like Sideways where as The Descendants was a little bit sweeter."

Apparently we're getting a turkey before Thanksgiving, courtesy of Shia Labeouf and his latest flick "Charlie Countryman".

"The critics say this movie is kind of a mess, they say that there's too much style and not enough substance. Everybody kind of applaud Shia Labeouf for taking chances with the roles that he's playing lately but this movie just doesn't work."

Matt Atchity is the editor in chief for the pop-culture website "Rotten Tomatoes." He also hosts a new show on Sirius XM called "Rotten Tomatoes Radio."

The weekly one hour call in show airs Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

‘Rotten Tomatoes TV Zone' is up now on the Rotten Tomatoes website.
