NEW YORK (AP) - New York City Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio says he's "cleared the air" with NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly after the city's top cop told Playboy magazine Democratic candidates were "pandering" when they criticized stop-and-frisk policies.

De Blasio visited the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network on Saturday. He said he had a good conversation with Kelly on Friday and they are moving forward.

In the December issue of the magazine, Kelly said de Blasio and other Democrats were "pandering to get votes," in criticizing stops of young black and Hispanic men. The city is appealing a judge's ruling it violated the Constitution in the way it carried out the stops.

De Blasio has said he won't keep Kelly as commissioner. The NYPD didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.

The recent death of a man from Staten Island while he was being arrested by NYPD officers is calling into question a police crackdown on petty offenses to discourage more serious crime. Critics say policing based on the so-called "broken windows" theory can needlessly put people at risk and fuel tensions in the city's minority communities.
