ATLANTA (AP) - U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed have plans to travel with Vice President Joe Biden next week for a tour of the Panama Canal expansion project.

Monday's trip will include a meeting with Panama President Ricardo Martinelli. Georgia officials have been working to ensure federal permits and funding to deepen the Port of Savannah to make room for supersized cargo ships expected to arrive via an expanded Panama Canal by mid-2015.

Among those also making the trip are Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schulz of Florida.

Gov. Nathan Deal announced this week that he plans to set aside $35 million more for the Savannah deepening project in his budget proposal next year, bringing the state's total contribution to $266 million.
