DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Highland Park mayor Deandre Windom is recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Police say he was shot and injured early Sunday morning at a Detroit club. Investigators believe the mayor was not the target of the shooting and was an innocent bystander.

The shooting took place around 1:45am at the Key Club on the 1400 block of Franklin. Police believe the shooting was the result of a dispute that did not involve the mayor. Windom is being treated for his injuries and is expected to recover. Fox 2 has learned he's alert and has been talking to detectives.

Initial reports suggested the mayor's security guard was involved in an altercation before the shooting, but the mayor's office now confirms that neither the security guard nor the mayor was involved in the altercation that happened before the shooting.

The alleged shooter, a 25 year old man from Eastpointe was taken into custody. The suspect was on parole for a weapons charge and has faced drug charges in the past. We're told there's surveillance video from inside the club, but the video is not being released.
