(MyFoxBoston.com) -- People from around the world are signing a petition to help a 12-year-old girl from New Hampshire receive potentially life saving treatment for a rare brain tumor. She attended a Celtics game Wednesday evening to slap five with the players.
McKenzie Lowe likes to do what most 12-year-olds do. She rides her horse, swims, plays basketball, and spends time with her family. She got to meet her favorite basketball player, Rajon Rondo, Wednesday night at the Celtics game.
This pre-teen is being forced to grow up too fast, battling a rare, inoperable brain tumor she was diagnosed with a year ago. Talking to her though, you'd never know it.
"It's not that bad, in the beginning it was a little bit harder because I had to go through my first radiation treatment and I was a little bit worried about what would happen," McKenzie explained to FOX 25.
Her family says that's an example of just how brave McKenzie is. She went through a year of radiation and chemotherapy treatments, but they didn't work. There is new hope in a controversial treatment based out of Texas, but the FDA won't let her do it.
"Since the drug has been banned since 2012 from using on any new patients, we decided we need to petition the FDA, which in the past has granted 471 special exemptions for other children going through this as well, there's no reason why it shouldn't go through again," said McKenzie's grandfather, Frank LaFountain.
Frank and the rest of his family are trying to get 100,000 signatures. Since they started the petition two weeks ago, they have just over 26,000. McKenzie can't believe people from all over the world have logged on to sign the petition and show their support.
"It feels like a lot of people care about what I'm going through," said McKenzie.
Frank is trying to get the word out nationally, not only to help his granddaughter, but countless other children who need experimental treatments too.
"I don't think it's anything for any parent or grandparent have a child go through anything like this or any form of cancer or any disease so you'll move heaven earth to help these kids and that's what I'll do for her," said Frank.
