Sidewalk Santa parade comes to an end

NEW YORK (AP) — Santa Claus ISN'T coming to town.

The group that puts on New York City's annual Sidewalk Santa Parade says its last bell has been jingled.

Volunteers of America-Greater New York says the parade and its Sidewalk Santa fundraising efforts have been retired and it's using more effective ways to raise money for its Hope and Hearth food voucher program.

The parade traditionally took place the Friday after Thanksgiving. The organization's program would have Santas try to get donations from people passing by their sidewalk locations.

Vice president Rachel Weinstein says the Sidewalk Santa program "was just not the most effective way to raise money."

The organization has had a Sidewalk Santa program since the early part of the 20th century.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
